The Steps in a Dental Implant Procedure

Dental Implant Weatherford, TX

Getting a dental implant will vary from patient to patient. However, there are common steps in the process that you can expect. Understanding how the treatment process works can help you mentally and physically prepare before your consultation visit, so you can make a more educated choice as to whether dental implants are right for you.

How a dental implant procedure works

The dental implant procedure involves a consultation visit, placement of the dental implant(s), and the placement of the restoration (crown, bridge, or denture). Some patients also require a bone graft procedure, particularly if they have lost bone in their jaw.

The consultation visit

The consultation visit is non-invasive and provides the patient with an opportunity to learn more about the process. During the visit, the dentist conducts an oral examination and orders dental X-rays to determine if the patient is a good candidate. They can then explain the procedure and help the patient decide if treatment is appropriate. If it is, then the patient and the dentist can put together a convenient treatment plan.

Bone graft procedure (if necessary)

Patients who are missing bone in the jaw may require a bone graft procedure to restore the bone density. Bone loss can occur as a result of atrophy after tooth loss or as a result of periodontal disease. Patients with periodontal disease may also need to improve their gum health before the placement of the dental implants. This process can take several months to complete.

Placement of the dental implant

Once the jaw has enough adequate bone to support the dental implant, then the placement procedure can be scheduled. This process involves making an incision into the gums to access the bone. A small hole is drilled into the jawbone. Finally, the implant is put into the proper position. After the procedure, the implant must osseointegrate with the jawbone, which can take four to eight months

Placement of the restoration

After the mouth heals and the implant fuses with the jawbone, then the patient can return for the placement of the dental restoration. There are three primary types of restorations: a crown, a bridge (partial denture), and a complete denture. The recommended option depends on the number of teeth that need replacement.

Long-term care for dental implants

One of the benefits of dental implants is how easy they are to care for. Patients can take care of their new teeth by brushing regularly, flossing often, and using mouthwash as directed, which is the same as what is done for natural teeth. Regular check-up visits are also important to ensure the longevity of the replacement teeth.
